In 2019, the CDC analyzed patient opioid prescription data from
Athenahealth and found that the percentage of patients prescribed an opioid was higher in rural areas than in urban settings. In that study, 14 rural counties were among the 15 counties with the highest opioid prescribing rates. The CDC found that patients in the most rural counties had an 87% higher chance of receiving an opioid prescription, compared to those in large central metro counties.* aafp.org

Discussion will include the use of opioid alternatives to effectively manage pain while minimizing the use of opioids, along with successful strategies to reduce new opioid starts, decrease opioids post-operatively, and assist with tapering of opioids in opioid dependent patients. 

Target Audience: Physicians, Nurse Practitioners 

Objectives:
1) Discuss primary causes of prescription opioid over-use.
2) Review the impact / increase of opioid use
during the COVID-19 pandemic.
3) Review ways to reduce new opioid starts.
2) Discuss strategies to decrease opioids post-operatively.
3) Discuss strategies that will assist the tapering of opioids in opioid-dependent patients.
