CMS, Joint Commission, DNV and Other Standards on Informed Consent : Maneuvering the Maze

Course Curriculum
This program will discuss the current CMS hospital Conditions of Participation (CoPs), including the critical access hospital, Joint Commission and DNV Healthcare standards on informed consent requirements. All hospitals that receive Medicare and Medicaid reimbursement must comply with these interpretive guidelines.

Learning Objectives 
At the conclusion of this session, the participants will be able to: 
1. Identify the 3 sections on informed consent in the CMS hospital CoP interpretive guidlines. 
2. List the six minimum requirements that are now mandatory to be on the informed consent form for surgery. 
3. Discuss the CMS and accreditation standards, applicable to your facility, that should be reflected in the hospital's policies and procedures. 
4. Identify the list of procedures and tests to be used by medical staff that will require informed consent under federal regulations. 

Target Audience
The target audience should include the CEO, CNO, CMO, COO, compliance officers, nurse directors and supervisors, clinical staff, including nurses and physicians, patient safety officers, legal counsel, risk managers and TJC and DNV coordinators.

Faculty

Sue Dill Calloway has been a nurse attorney and consultant for more than 30 years.  Currently, she is president of Patient Safety and Healthcare Education and Consulting and was previously the chief learning officer for the Emergency Medicine Patient Safety Foundation. She has conducted many educational programs for nurses, physicians, and other health care providers. Sue has authored over 100 books and numerous articles. She is a frequent speaker and is well known across the country in the area of healthcare law, risk management, and patient safety. Sue has no real or perceived conflicts of interest that relate to this presentation.
