WEBINAR: Seclusion in the ED: A Case Study

Ben Farber, CNP, RN, CNL, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer at PeaceHealth SHMC-UD in Oregon, will walk webinar participants through a case study of how the hospital created built space for patients experiencing a behavioral health crisis in the emergency department and the physical changes that occurred during the ED renovation to create this space.  He will also cover the training completed with ED caregivers working in this area; determination process of appropriate room choice during triage; processes in place to keep the milieu well-controlled and safe, policies and procedures in place specifically related to restraint/seclusion from the viewpoint of compliance with state and federal regulatory requirements, staff and patient safety, and patient dignity.  Finally, Ben will discuss lessons learned, additional secure space being added to better serve the community, and answer any questions you may have about their process.

Ben Farber serves as the Chief Nursing Officer at PeaceHealth Sacred Heart Medical Center-University District in Eugene Oregon.  He holds a DNP in Systems Leadership from Rush University and holds the CNL, NEA-BC, and CENP certifications.  He previously served as the Senior Director of Patient Care Services at Mercy Southwest Hospital in Bakersfield, California.  In his current role, Ben oversees nursing services throughout the hospital, including the 29 bed emergency department.  Through renovations that occurred in 2014, the emergency department includes a secured area with 9 rooms for patients experiencing behavioral health crisis.  The 100 bed hospital also includes a 36 bed Behavioral Health Unit, 46 bed medical/Acute Care of the Elderly unit, 18 bed rehabilitation unit, and an infusion center that operates 365 days per year.
