Feb. 2 - “I Can Cope: Taking Charge of Money Matters” by Guest Speaker: James Wilson, Attorney at Law. 8 to 9 a.m. in the first floor conference room of Ocean Springs Medical Park. Educational classes for people facing cancer – either personally, or as a friend or family caregiver. Living with cancer is one of the greatest challenges a person can face in the course of a lifetime. I Can Cope offers help- in the form of reliable information, peer support, and practical coping skills – so that you can meet this challenge. Each Month, all participants will get to sample a healthy recipe provided by the Cancer Center Dietitian. I Can Cope is an American Cancer Society Sponsored Program along with Singing River Health System. Feb. 4 - Baptist Medical Center, $25 Heart Day (valued at $450) features the “Heart Basic” package of Baptist’s comprehensive “Healthy Life Screenings” program. This screening, held by appointment,is available for adults ages 18 and older. You are required to fast for 12 hours before your scheduled screening. 7:00–11:00 AM, Baptist Cardiovascular Center. Feb. 4, 11, 18, 25 & March 3 - Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle in Columbus will be celebrating February’s Heart Month by offering a special heart screening to the public while also generating much needed funding for non-profit organizations in Lowndes County. For a $50 fee, an individual can receive a Heart Score™ screening at the hospital. The screenings are being held by appointment in the hospital’s Outpatient Pavilion from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. Twenty-five dollars of the total will be applied to the physicians’ cost to read the test. The remainder of the proceeds will go to the Lowndes County United Way. A Heart Score™ is painless, non-evasive CT scan that takes images of the heart to detect the buildup of calcium deposits in the heart. The more coronary calcium means the greater likelihood of narrowing in the coronary system and a higher risk of a future heart attack. The screening is recommended for those aged 35 and older and those who do not have a known history of heart disease.
Feb. 7 - Bereavement Support Group Tuesday, 6 p.m. Forrest General’s Home Care and Hospice, 1414 South 28th Avenue, Hattiesburg. The Bereavement Support Group is for individuals who have experienced the loss of a loved one. The meetings occur on the first Tuesday of every month and are free to the public. Feb. 7 - CanSurmount Support Group, 7 p.m.Forrest General’s Cancer Center, 310 South 28th Avenue, Hattiesburg.The CanSurmount Support Group helps cancer patients and their families cope with the overwhelming burden the disease places on them. In addition to emotional support, CanSurmount provides informational resources designed to help patients better understand the nature of the disease and treatment methods. In this free, one-day course, you will learn the healthy benefits of breastfeeding, proper latch on, nutrition, and how to work through any challenges you may have. We suggest you come in your seventh month of pregnancy. Father may attend with mother to be but is not required. Feb. 11 - Preparing for Childbirth Class. 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Singing River Hospital Medical Staff Conference Room. This free, one-day class is taught by Certified Childbirth Educators (RN's). We suggest you enroll in this class when you are in your 7th month of pregnancy. Mother and coach will learn about the stages of labor, delivery, & recovery, plus different type of anesthesia. You will learn about your newborn's appearance, general newborn care. At the end of class, you will have the opportunity to tour the Labor & Delivery area in the hospital. The Autism Spectrum Support Group offers parents, family and community members the opportunity to share information about the disorder and learn how to cope with it. The meetings provide resources and guest speakers who are knowledgeable on autism. The meetings occur on the second Sunday of every month and are free to the public. Child care is provided. Feb. 15 - Better Breathers Support Group, Noon. LiveWell Center Cloverleaf Medical Plaza (next to Wal-Mart), 5909 Highway 49, Suite 40, Hattiesburg. The Better Breathers Support Group gives patients, families and friends an opportunity to gather and share information about Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), as well as other breathing disorders. COPD includes conditions such as emphysema, asthma and chronic bronchitis. The group also has access to informational resources and speakers who are knowledgeable about the special needs of people with breathing disorders. A class in which a trained volunteer cosmetologist teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry.
