The Most Cited Deficiencies by  the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for Hospitals

Course Curriculum

Every hospital that has an emergency department and accepts Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement must follow the federal law and CMS interpretive guidelines on Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA).
Part 2 will cover the recent changes by the Office of Inspector General (OIG), which will impact on-call physicians and recent OIG investigations. Our speaker will focus on EMTALA issues, including payment concerns, patient financial questions, the required policies and procedures, and hospital recommendations.  The speaker will also discuss EMTALA special responsibilities and EMTALA outpatients, inpatients and observation. 

Learning Objectives
1.Discuss why EMTALA is the most frequent cited deficiency for hospitals.
2.Describe the basic concept of EMTALA.
3.Discuss the requirements of EMTALA.
4.Discuss the hospital's requirement to maintain a list of the specific names of physicians who are on call to evaluate emergency department patients.
5.Identify the CMS requirements of what must be on the EMTALA sign.
6.Discuss when a hospital must complete a certification of false labor.
7.Explain state plans and EMTALA.
8.Discuss what is involved in medications.
9.Describe the Quality Improvement Organization (QIO) role with EMTALA.
