Course Curriculum
Restraints and seclusion continue to be commonly cited and are a top concern
to hospitals during surveys and complaint investigations conducted by CMS,
state survey agencies and accrediting organizations such as The Joint
Commission and Det Norske Veritas. This webinar will address restraint and
seclusion regulations, citations and much more.

Learning Objectives
? Describe CMS definitions of restraints and seclusion.
? Describe which restraint regulations are at greatest risk for citation and how
to prevent a citation.
? Demonstrate requirements to utilize restraints.
? Identify which deaths while in restraints must be reported to CMS.
? Describe the internal log requirements for restraint deaths.

Speaker
Nancy Ruzicka is a recognized expert on state and federal rules, regulations
and interpretative guidelines who has presented at many organizations and
educational events. She has previously worked as director of integrity and
compliance and privacy official at MercyOne Des Moines, as director of
regulatory compliance at UnityPoint Health-Des Moines and has more than 20
years of experience with the Iowa Department of Inspections and Appeals.
Ruzicka holds master’s degrees in health law and business administration and
a bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, all from Drake University. She is certified in
health care compliance and maintains her Iowa pharmacy license.
